Each year the Environmental Business Council recognizes young professionals in the energy and environmental fields who demonstrate exceptional leadership and industry involvement early in their promising careers with this award. BETA was the proud recipient of a 2021 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award from the Massachusetts branch of the American Council of Engineering Companies for our work on Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue Revitalization project. The completed improvements transform the visual environment and extend the City’s network of bikes, pedestrians, transit, vehicular amenities, and opportunity for uninterrupted access to destinations via safe, comfortable, convenient streets. Looking for funding to clean up your community?
The Environmental Protection Agency has opened the latest round of Multipurpose, Assessment, RLF, and Cleanup (MARC) Grant applications. Grants offered by the Brownfields Program may be used to address sites contaminated by hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants (including hazardous substances co-mingled with petroleum), and petroleum. The application submission deadline is December 1, 2021.
BETA has helped many communities throughout New England with the grant application process as well as brownfields cleanup and remediation.

Cochituate Rail Trail officially opens in Natick/Framingham
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation held a ribbon cutting for the Natick/Framingham Cochituate Rail Trail project on Tuesday, September 28 with the new Route 30 shared-use path bridge that connects the Natick and Framingham trail as a backdrop. BETA provided design and construction phase services for the project, which spans 2.4 miles from the Framingham border to just north of the MBTA station in Natick. The new section of trail connects to the Saxonville section in Framingham, with plans for more connections in the future. Unofficially open for months, the new section of trail has been well-received by the community as a wonderful asset with spectacular views.
Calling the project “a milestone on our transformation as a region,” Joshua Ostroff, Chair of the Cochituate Advisory Board, recognized that “we are in a new age where thousands of people are looking for clean and healthy transportation and recreation opportunities.” Click here to read more!
Welcome to the team!
David Ankener is a senior resident representative in BETA’s construction services group. He has over 36 years in the environmental/construction industry, most of which working for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection as a project engineer. In this role, he ushered projects through the SRF loan program from first submittal of the application to the completion and close-out of the project, including construction inspection. Some major projects David worked on include new wastewater treatment facilities in Falmouth, Kingston, Nantucket, New Bedford, and Plymouth.
Will Coris has joined the team as a staff engineer in BETA’s transportation group. Will graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in civil engineering and a minor in math. He previously worked for a construction company where he oversaw the construction of two Massachusetts K-12 public school projects. Prior to that, Will gained technical design experience as an intern with a firm in Poughkeepsie, NY, working on pump station, structure buoyancy, and septic absorption field calculations.
This month we also welcomed Sami El Khatib as an engineering designer in BETA’s wastewater group. Sami earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering and bachelor’s in civil and environmental engineering, both at Northeastern University. He recently worked as an environmental engineer where he conducted site inspections and assisted in environmental site assessments in accordance with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan and ASTM guidelines. Sami also interned at Boston Water & Sewer Commission, and Khatib & Alami Consolidated Engineering Company, located in Beirut.
