Cemetery Master Planning

Hartford, Connecticut

BETA is working with the City of Hartford to develop master plans for improvements to three cemeteries. Old South Cemetery is a 2.5 acre parcel located in Hartford, CT. It is the second oldest municipal burial ground in the City, and while some of the land has markers indicating burial sites, much of it is open land. In addition to suggesting improvements, BETA assisted the city with ground penetrating radar (GPR) to identify unmarked burials. The results will dictate whether, and where, landscape improvements can be made and will provide indication for key features such as interpretive signage.

All three cemeteries (Old South Burial Grounds, Northwoods Cemetery, and Zion Hill Cemetery) were field reviewed to inventory and evaluate their conditions. Recommendations for improvements included a cost estimate for implementation.
