Maine Street Station Redevelopment Plan

Brunswick, Maine

The Town of Brunswick initiated the Maine Street Station Redevelopment Master Plan in an effort to return an under-utilized brownfield site to an active use as a distinctive contributor to downtown.

BETA’s urban planning skills elevated interactive communication to a broadly understood and advocated vision for this transit-oriented district. Through a series of community outreach meetings, BETA formulated the Citizen’s Collective vision for the 9+ acre parcel.  BETA’s ability to integrate massive infrastructure within the small scale of a New England community resulted in a vibrantly functioning center of downtown activities and was responsible for advancing the urban design objectives from a conceptual level through local permitting and into the construction documents stage.

During the groundbreaking for the $25 million project, Governor Baldacci proclaimed the project a good investment and encouraged the state to ‘celebrate this opportunity’. Plans incorporated stormwater treatment systems with native plantings, establishing broad linear planting beds and creating a 1/4 acre pocket park with grassy, open space and a small performance stage.
