BETA Group, Inc. Recognized with Two ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Awards

April 15, 2026

BETA Group, Inc. is proud to announce that two of its recent projects have been recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) through the 2026 Engineering Excellence Awards program. The Francis R. Carroll Plaza in Worcester received a Silver Award, and the Norton/Mansfield Rail Trail Extension earned a Bronze Award.

The Francis R. Carroll Plaza represents a transformative reimagining of one of downtown Worcester’s most prominent civic spaces. Located at the intersection of Main, Southbridge, and Federal Streets, directly in front of The Hanover Theatre, the project converts a former vehicle-dominated intersection into a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented public plaza. Designed by BETA in collaboration with the City of Worcester, The Hanover Theatre, and the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID), the plaza integrates performance infrastructure, public art, and streetscape design to create a flexible, accessible gathering space.

The centerpiece of the plaza is Calliope, a sculptural fountain featuring programmable lighting and misting systems, paired with a fully integrated performance stage that allows theatrical productions to extend into the public realm. The project also incorporates custom granite paving, native plantings, and energy-efficient lighting systems, all designed to support year-round community use while enhancing downtown vitality. By reclaiming roadway space for public use, the plaza demonstrates how infrastructure investments can elevate both cultural identity and economic activity in urban environments.

The Norton/Mansfield Rail Trail Extension expands regional connectivity through the development of a multi-use path linking Mansfield and Norton while improving access to transit, employment centers, and recreational resources. Extending the existing Mansfield trail, the project introduces a 10- to 12-foot shared-use path along a former railroad corridor, with innovative design solutions to safely navigate complex conditions, including a crossing over Route 495.

BETA served as lead designer and project manager, delivering a comprehensive approach that balanced transportation, environmental, and community priorities. The project incorporates a range of safety enhancements at roadway crossings, including pedestrian hybrid beacons and rapid flashing beacons, as well as multiple trail configurations to accommodate diverse users. By transforming an underutilized corridor into a safe, accessible transportation and recreation asset, the project supports regional mobility, sustainability, and quality of life.

The ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Awards recognize projects that demonstrate innovation, complexity, and value to the engineering profession. Congratulations to the City of Worcester and the Towns of Mansfield and Norton for their commitment to creating vibrant, connected communities, and we are proud to have supported their efforts in bringing these award-winning projects to life.
