Parks & Recreation Month: The Power of Play, Community, and Inclusive Design

Every July, Parks & Recreation Month celebrates the parks, trails, playgrounds, and public spaces that strengthen our communities and enrich everyday life. This year’s theme, “The Power Of…”, highlights the many ways these spaces bring people together, promote healthy communities, and create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to connect.

At BETA, we see every park, playground, and recreational space as an opportunity to create places that are safe, welcoming, and accessible. Through thoughtful planning, collaborative design, and community input, these projects become assets for nearby residents and visitors.

The recently completed Reilly School Playground in Lowell, Massachusetts, is one example of that vision brought to life.

The Power of Inclusive Play

The original playground had served generations of students, but due to aging equipment, limited play opportunities, and an undersized area, the space no longer met the needs of the school’s growing student population.

BETA reimagined the playground as a vibrant destination where children of all abilities can learn, play, and explore together. The new design features universally accessible play areas, sensory-rich experiences, spaces for active recreation, and quiet places for independent play, creating an environment that welcomes every child and supports a wide range of physical, social, and developmental needs. Displaced soil was also thoughtfully repurposed into landscape enhancements throughout the site.

The Power of Thoughtful Design

Every feature within the playground was selected with purpose. A colorful movement maze inspires exploration while promoting active play and learning. Sensory and climbing elements challenge children physically while supporting confidence and discovery. Interactive musical play elements encourage creativity and shared experiences. Cozy retreat spaces, purposefully placed away from the musical instruments, offer opportunities for imaginative play or a quiet sensory break, while accessible pathways and entrances ensure families can comfortably navigate the entire site.

Beyond the playground itself, the project expanded its impact by transforming the surrounding park into a more connected community destination. A revitalized basketball court, shaded picnic pavilion, improved site furnishings, and welcoming gathering spaces encourage residents of all ages to spend time outdoors, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the park together.

The Power of Collaboration

Throughout the project, BETA partnered closely with the City of Lowell and community stakeholders to understand how the space could better serve students, families, and neighborhood residents. That collaborative process helped shape a playground that reflects community priorities while supporting long-term accessibility, safety, and recreation.
