Reilly School Playground

The City of Lowell engaged BETA to transform the aging Reilly School Playground into a safe, inclusive, and vibrant community destination. The existing playground, more than 30 years old, contained deteriorating equipment, tripping hazards, and limited opportunities for inclusive play. In addition, the existing play area was severely undersized for the school population, requiring staff to limit and manage the number of children using the playground at one time.

Working closely with the City and community stakeholders, BETA developed a comprehensive redesign focused on accessibility, recreation, inclusivity, and long-term community value. The renovated playground features expanded universally accessible play areas with modern equipment designed to support children of all abilities while meeting current ADA and playground safety standards. The design incorporates a wide variety of play experiences, including musical play elements, a cozy dome village, active climbing and sensory play opportunities, quiet seating and retreat areas, and flexible spaces that support both social interaction and independent play.

The project also transformed underutilized asphalt areas into a colorful movement maze that encourages active play, learning, and exploration. Beyond the playground itself, the surrounding recreational amenities were reimagined to create a more connected and welcoming park environment. Improvements included reconstruction of the basketball court into a modern facility, upgraded accessible pathways and entrances serving the community, and the installation of new benches, signage, trash receptacles, and other site furnishings. A shaded picnic pavilion near the entrance provides an inviting gathering space for families, students, and nearby residents.
