Celebrating and protecting our most valuable resource

World Water Day 2022

World Water Day, held on March 22nd every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of fresh water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.

This year’s theme is groundwater, which will play a critical role in adapting to climate change. We all need to work together to sustainably manage this valuable resource. Learn more about groundwater here and check out some of BETA’s groundwater assessment and remediation work here.

Sliplining the East Bay Pipeline

BETA Senior Project Manager Paul Smith will be participating in the Distribution & Storage Session on Thursday, April 7th from 9-11am to discuss BETA’s East Bay Pipeline project with Deputy Executive Director of the Bristol County Water Authority, Michael Crawford. The Bristol County Water Authority (BCWA) provides water to 50,000 customers in the Towns of Bristol, Barrington and Warren, Rhode Island through their East Bay Pipeline water transmission main. This critical piece of infrastructure, which conveys all of BCWA’s water supply, sprung a major leak in the Spring of 2019. The presentation will describe the initial investigation, repair efforts, and sliplining of the 4,300 foot 24” pipeline crossing beneath the Providence River.

Upper Bay Regional Wastewater Feasibility Assessment report

Improving water quality in Upper Buzzards Bay

The Buzzard’s Bay Coalition issued a report earlier this month called “The Upper Bay Regional Wastewater Feasibility Assessment” which presents a long-term solution for improved wastewater management for several communities that border Buzzard’s Bay in Massachusetts. The Upper Buzzards Bay project brings together multiple partners across a large geographic area to capitalize on a unique opportunity to jointly solve water quality issues associated with inadequate treatment of wastewater. BETA was part of the team that helped the Coalition evaluate options for relocating the Buzzards Bay wastewater treatment facility’s effluent discharge in an effort to reduce nitrogen pollution to the entire upper Buzzards Bay area. Click here to read more about this impactful project.
