Honoring the Evolution of Engineering on Professional Engineers Day

August 6, 2025

Each year on the first Wednesday in August, we celebrate Professional Engineers Day – a moment to recognize the licensed engineers who have committed themselves to public safety and continuous innovation in the built environment. Launched in 2016 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, this day is about more than just credentials; it’s about honoring the rigorous journey to licensure and the critical role professional engineers play in improving our communities.

On this tenth anniversary of Licensed PE Day, we’re marking the milestone by looking at how far the tools of the trade have come. From hand-drawn plans to virtual renderings, we’re spotlighting both the technology that built our past and the tools powering our future.

A Nod to the Past: Old-School Engineering Tools

Before CAD, drones, and cloud-based GIS, engineers relied on a range of analog tools to create, calculate, and communicate – mostly by hand! Here’s a look at some crucial tools that helped shape the infrastructure we still rely on today.

Used to measure areas on hand-drawn plans, the planimeter was essential for calculating square footage before digital overlays existed.

Early file storage for saving and sharing digital information was limited to less than 1.5 megabytes, or 0.1% of a gigabyte. Pre-graphing calculators were vital and reliable – still functioning today!

Precision drafting started with a perfect point. Many engineers kept drawing leads and a sanding block for sharpening nearby.

From drawing angles to precise measurements, these tools were drafting staples.

Some of our oldest archived plans still wow us with their detail and craftsmanship – proof that engineering has always been both art and science. This one is from 1989!

Eyes on the Future: Today’s Engineering Technology

While those older tools paved the way, modern engineers are equipped with digital resources that have transformed what’s possible. At BETA, we embrace innovation and continuous learning to increase efficiency and maintain excellence.

Computer-Aided Design has replaced manual drafting, allowing for faster iterations, increased precision, and better collaboration between teams.

From aerial base maps to interactive design overlays, engineers now use GIS-based tools for site planning, field verification, and client presentations.

We are pivoting from paper plans and, in many cases, now sharing and submitting designs electronically, making reviews smoother and greener.

Advanced modeling software like Lumion, SketchUp, and Civil 3D allow engineers and landscape architects to create immersive visuals—bringing projects to life before a shovel hits the ground.

Our professional engineers have spent years mastering their disciplines, studying for licensure, and building the trust that our clients rely on every day. From transportation safety to water infrastructure, structural integrity and site design, their work underpins the communities we live and work in. We’re grateful for our team and the integrity, expertise, and passion they bring to every project. Happy Professional Engineers Day from all of us at BETA!
