Moving Forward After a Historic Storm

Last week’s historic blizzard tested every community it touched. We recognize and applaud the extraordinary effort of public works crews who worked tirelessly to restore safe travel under incredibly difficult conditions.

As communities recover, it’s also an opportunity to strengthen winter operations for the future.

BETA’s Snow Route Optimization program uses GIS-based analysis to evaluate and improve existing plow routes, helping municipalities:

  • Clear priority and residential roads more efficiently
  • Adjust routing strategies based on storm duration and intensity
  • Scale operations for routine snowfalls or major blizzard events
  • Reduce overtime, fuel use, and redundant mileage
  • Balance crew workloads
  • Improve response times during major events

Extreme storms are becoming more frequent and more demanding. Optimized routes help ensure your community is prepared for the next one with smarter, more resilient winter operations.

Partnerships That Point the Way

In Easton, Massachusetts, a sign does more than point the way. It tells a story.

When the Town set out to strengthen its downtown identity, BETA’s wayfinding signage team joined Town leadership and stakeholders to think beyond directional arrows. Together, they built a branding and wayfinding master plan that weaves navigation, history, and community character into one cohesive system.

From gateway markers to pedestrian guidance, every element was shaped through thoughtful collaboration. The goal was simple but meaningful: help residents and visitors move confidently through downtown while reinforcing what makes Easton a unique destination.Hear from David Field and Greg Swan, the Town’s DPW Director and Deputy Director, as well as Aimee Couture and Randy Collins from BETA’s wayfinding signage team, about the process, the partnership, and the details that brought the vision to life.

Celebrating Women in Science

On February 11, we recognized the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a global celebration of the women advancing discovery, innovation, and problem-solving across STEM disciplines. At BETA, that impact is felt every day through the work of our environmental scientists across New England.

From site assessments and remediation to ecological evaluations and regulatory compliance, their projects demand technical precision, persistence, and a strong sense of responsibility to the communities they serve. Much of this work happens behind the scenes, yet its impact is lasting, resulting in healthier environments and more resilient spaces in the communities where we live and work.

To mark the occasion, some of our team members reflected on moments in their careers that make them proud to be scientists. Their stories offer a closer look at science in action and the meaningful outcomes that grow from dedication, expertise, and passion for the job. Read more here.

Community One Stop for Growth Funding Opportunity

Attention Massachusetts communities: The FY26 Community One Stop for Growth program is now open. As the Commonwealth’s primary pathway for public economic development investment, One Stop brings together 12 grant programs under a single, streamlined application. The funding supports initiatives ranging from public infrastructure and site readiness to brownfield cleanup and downtown revitalization.

Strong applications start well before the deadline. Clear project vision, defined scope, environmental considerations, and implementation strategy all play a role in positioning communities for success.

BETA works alongside municipalities and agencies from early planning through construction, providing engineering, environmental, and site readiness expertise to help projects compete effectively and move forward once funding is secured.

Expressions of Interest are due by June 3. If your community is considering an application, contact Rick Stinson at RStinson@BETA-Inc.com to discuss your project and how we can support your submission.
