BETA was retained to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, and minimize traffic conflicts at the Boston Road (Route 3A) and Allen Road Intersection. The project’s design re-aligns the intersection, improves sight distance, and provides fully actuated traffic signals. Best Management Practice devices were being instituted, including deep sump catch basins, sediment traps, and detention basins to control and treat runoff from existing and new pavement areas. A new drainage system outfall was also being installed. Various coordination efforts were needed between National Grid on their gas main replacement, utility pole relocations, and storm water improvements under the MassDOT project.
The geometric design of intersection required detailed coordination with abutting properties, including a donut shop. Alteration of the state layout lines was required. Proposed improvements include:
- Adding one lane in both directions and roadway widening
- Pavement milling and overlay
- Sidewalk reconstruction
- Installing ADA wheel chair ramps
- Inclusion of bicycle sharrows
- New signals
