Taxiway C Realignment & Rehabilitation at T.F. Green Intl. Airport

BETA provided drainage and stormwater design, along with environmental permitting, for the rehabilitation of Taxiway C at T.F. Green International Airport. The project included retrofitting the existing drainage system, modifying three outfalls, and implementing three stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to capture, treat, and infiltrate stormwater through underground infiltration chambers and dry swales.

The improvements brought Taxiway C into compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards while improving water quality, reducing flooding, and addressing impairments in Buckeye Brook and its tributaries identified in the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s (RIDEM) 2022 Impaired Waters Report.

Major project elements included:

• Installation of two underground infiltration chamber systems to capture and infiltrate stormwater runoff
• Installation of three dry swales with riprap outlet protection
• Installation of drainage structures to improve stormwater conveyance and maintain flow to existing infiltration trenches
• Installation of a pretreatment unit
• Removal of existing headwalls, culverts, access roadway, and taxiway pavement
• Construction of the new Taxiway C pavement structure

BETA obtained the required RIDEM Freshwater Wetlands, RIPDES, and Underground Injection Control (UIC) permits to support project construction.
